One year ago I entered this crazy, new, awesome, hard as hell adventure in my life -- it's called motherhood.
If I could write a letter to myself after one year of motherhood, this is what it would say:
Dear Mother of a One Year Old,
Pat yourself on the back. You made it. They say this year is the hardest. It won't be. But you know every year will be quick and every year will be worth it.
365 days ago you were changed in a way you still don't even understand. You never will. Your heart will be broken for the rest of your life - broken because the days are fleeting, broken because the days are long, broken because you will never ever be the person you were before you became a mom. Broken because you want to do everything right and broken because you feel as if you are doing everything wrong. Broken because you can't freeze every second and broken because you waste most of them away. But your heart has never, ever been more full. It will never, ever be empty again.
Give yourself a break. You are present even when you think you couldn't be more lost. You are the sparkle in those big blue eyes. You are the miracle to those tiny fingers. You are a mom. If your baby prayed, he/she would thank God for you. You are that sweet baby's angel. God picked you. Hand-picked you. There is nothing more powerful than that. No one else's voice can soothe a late-night cry. No one else's touch can calm a racing heart. No one else's kiss can fix a boo-boo. You are a mom. You are needed and you can do it. You will do it. You are a mom.
Love,
Mother of a One-Year-Old
